How Our Halloween Yard Comes Together: From Fall Porch to Spooky Night

How It Starts

Halloween at our house doesn’t start with the giant props or the lights. We usually start with a simple fall setup on the porch — pumpkins, hay bales, corn stalks and some fall color. Then, little by little, Halloween starts taking over.

What begins as a fall porch eventually spreads across the yard. Pumpkins come out, the bigger decorations start going together, lights get added, and before long the whole front of the house has changed.

Then Halloween Starts Taking Over

Once we start bringing out the Halloween decorations, things change pretty quickly. The fall setup stays, but we start mixing in the lighted pumpkins and Halloween pieces we’ve collected over the years.

We don’t really follow a perfect plan. A lot of it is putting things out, stepping back, moving them around and seeing what works. Every year the setup ends up a little different.

Building Out the Yard

Once the porch starts coming together, we move into the yard. This is where the bigger decorations start coming out — the trees, pumpkins, characters and all the pieces that eventually turn the whole front yard into our Halloween setup.

We don’t really have an exact plan for where everything goes. A lot of it is putting things out, stepping back, moving them around and seeing what works. Sometimes we even walk across the street just to see how the whole yard looks together.

Every year it ends up a little different, and that’s part of the fun.

Some Pieces Become Favorites

Over the years we’ve collected quite a few Halloween decorations, and some of them have definitely become favorites. Jack and Zero are two that always find their way back into the display.

Part of the fun each year is figuring out where everything is going to go. We reuse a lot of the same pieces, but changing their location or putting them together differently can make the whole setup feel new again.

We Usually Have Some Help

Halloween decorating around here is definitely a family project — and apparently that includes a little supervision from the cat.

As things start lighting up and moving around the yard, there’s usually someone checking out what we’re doing. It’s these little moments during the setup that end up being part of the fun too.

When the Sun Goes Down

The setup really changes once it gets dark. During the day you can see all the individual decorations, but at night the lights bring everything together and the whole yard takes on a completely different look.

That’s usually the moment when all the moving things around, running lights and figuring out where everything should go finally feels worth it.

Halloween at our house is never exactly the same from year to year. We reuse a lot of our favorite decorations, add a few new things and usually find a different way to put everything together.
