Why I Bought Hisense TVs — And Why I’d Buy Them Again

I Didn’t Expect Hisense to Be This Good

I’ve owned Sony and Samsung TVs, and I still have a Sony that I think is remarkable. So when I first bought a Hisense U8 in 2024, I wasn’t expecting it to compete with the bigger names.

It surprised me.

The picture is bright, the blacks are impressive, colors really pop, and Mini-LED makes a bigger difference than I expected. For the money, the U8 hit a sweet spot I wasn’t finding without spending considerably more.

I liked it enough that when I wanted a TV for our backyard, I went with Hisense again — this time a U6 Mini-LED.

And that’s where things got even more interesting.

Why the U8 Won Me Over

What stood out first was brightness. This TV gets bright — really bright — but it wasn't just about having a bright picture. The Mini-LED backlighting gives it the contrast I was looking for too. Dark scenes have surprisingly deep blacks, while bright scenes still have plenty of punch.

Sports are where I really notice it. Football and soccer look great, motion is smooth, and the field, uniforms and crowd all have that crisp, colorful look I want from a TV.

I've had more expensive TVs, including Sony, and I still think Sony makes a remarkable picture. But that's also what made the Hisense surprise me. I didn't feel like I was giving up nearly as much as the price difference would suggest.

I also haven't had the same experience with some of the less-expensive Samsung models I've owned. To get the Samsung picture I'd be happy with, I'd personally be looking farther up their lineup.

For me, that's where Hisense makes sense: a lot of TV for the money.

The U6 Surprised Me Even More Outdoors

I bought the U6 for a completely different reason. I wanted a TV for the backyard without spending a fortune on something that was going to live outside.

What surprised me most was how well it handles daylight. My backyard gets plenty of natural light, and the picture is still clear, bright and colorful during the day. I expected some compromise going with the less-expensive U6, especially outdoors, but it has been much better than I expected.

At night, it gets even better. The Mini-LED picture really pops, blacks look deeper, and the colors stand out against the darker backyard. And something I didn't expect to care about as much outdoors — the built-in sound is actually good. There's enough bass that I haven't felt the need to add a soundbar outside.

For what I wanted — a bright, good-looking backyard TV without breaking the bank — the U6 has been a great fit.

Daylight Was the Real Test

Putting a TV outside is completely different from watching one in a controlled room. Glare and daylight can wash out a picture fast, so I honestly wasn’t sure how the U6 would do.

That ended up being one of my biggest surprises. Even during the day, the picture stays bright, clear and colorful enough that we can actually sit outside and enjoy it. I’m not claiming it’s a dedicated outdoor TV — it isn’t — but in my backyard setup, the brightness has been more than enough.

The sound surprised me too. The built-in subwoofer gives it more punch than I expected from TV speakers, which matters outside where sound can disappear pretty quickly. I haven’t needed to add a soundbar.

For the price, that combination of brightness, picture quality and sound is hard to beat.

U6 or U8 — Which Would I Buy?

If I were choosing between the two today, it would really come down to where the TV is going.

For my main TV inside the house, I’d still choose the U8. It gives me the brighter, more premium-looking picture, deeper blacks, stronger contrast, and the overall performance I want for sports and everyday viewing.

For a second TV, backyard setup, garage, bedroom, or anywhere I’m trying to keep the cost down, the U6 is the better value play. It gives up some performance compared with the U8, but not nearly as much as I expected for the price difference.

That’s really why Hisense has worked for me. The U8 gives me the higher-end experience I wanted without jumping all the way into premium-brand pricing, while the U6 gives me a lot of the same character for considerably less money.

If picture quality is the priority, I’d go U8. If value is the priority, I’d go U6.

What I’d Buy Today

One thing worth mentioning: the exact U8 I bought in 2024 is no longer the current model. Hisense has continued updating the U8 line, so if you’re shopping today, you’ll see newer versions with even higher brightness and updated features.

The same idea applies to the U6. Mine has been a great backyard TV, but Hisense continues to update that series too.

I wouldn’t tell someone to hunt down the exact models I own just because I’ve had a good experience with them. I’d look at the current U6 and U8 models and choose based on budget and where the TV is going.
